Staten Island Sandhill Crane Outing
Saturday, November 16, 2-7 pm
Staten Island is a unique landscape located in the heart of the Sacramento -San Joaquin River Delta. Owned by the Nature Conservancy, the island is leased to farmers whose methods make the area a critical wintering ground for Sandhill Cranes and dozens of other waterfowl species, sometimes in great numbers. With a wingspan of more than 5 feet and calls that light up the dawn, sandhill cranes fly south from as far as Siberia, and thousands of them spend late autumn and much of winter just outside of Lodi.
The greater sandhill crane, too large to roost in trees, overnight in marshes because they can hear the sloshing of approaching predators, making it easier to flee. This sunset outing will allow us to watch the trumpeting cranes fly in at dusk, their crimson heads shining.
We will arrive for the evening fly-in, and return after dark. Space may be limited by the number of drivers. Meeting location TBD. Signups will be taken after further details are added.
